Volunteer Opportunities
Our programs serve adults and children in Sheboyan County. Find the program that best suits your interests and availabilty:
- Adult One-on-One Tutoring Program
If you are looking for a rewarding volunteer experience, consider becoming a literacy tutor! Our adult tutoring program serves adults 18 years of age and older who would like to improve their basic literacy skills, or who would like to learn to speak, read, and write English.
Students and teachers meet at mutually agreeable times and places. For example, public libraries are often chosen as meeting places. No prior tutoring or teaching background is needed to become a tutor--just patience, a high school diploma, and a desire to help an adult improve his or her English literacy.
The Literacy Council Project provides all training and instructional materials for tutors, and serves as an ongoing resource for training and support. Tutoring schedules are flexible to suit tutor and student availability. On average, tutors spend two hours a week tutoring their student.
Our demand for volunteer tutors remains high. If you are interested in knowing more about how you can help an adult improve his or her literacy so that they can achieve their personal, educational, and work-related goals, please call or email, or submit a Volunteer Intake form.
- Free Training for Tutors
Training sessions give tutors an overview of what they need to know to get started tutoring an adult learner. Topics include a discussion of learning styles, lesson planning, cultural diversity, and reading instruction basics. All training materials and instructional materials are provided by the Literacy Council.
In addition to Tutor Training Sessions, we offer Tutor Orientation sessions. These informational sessions provide prospective tutors with information on the Family Resource Center and the Literacy Council Project, our One-on-One Adult Tutoring program philosophy, and the responsibilities of tutors and students. Not sure if tutoring is for you? Attend an Orientation session on August 4, September 1, or October 6 to learn more!
UPCOMING TRAINING SESSIONS:
Session A: August 16 & 18
Session B: September 14 & 16
Session C: October 19 & 21

Partners in Reading
Partners in Reading is a reading enrichment program that matches volunteer reading partners with elementary school students to provide additional one-on-one or small-group reading opportunities.
Partners in Reading volunteers share the joy of reading with students in grades
K-3 in public and private schools across Sheboygan County. Reading partners visit schools during the school day and work under the supervision of the classroom teachers and reading specialists. Volunteers typically spend a minimum of 45 minutes to an hour per week at their schools.
The Literacy Council Project provides an Orientation session for all new volunteers prior to placement in schools. Volunteers can request placement at a particular school and every effort is made to honor those requests. Prospective volunteers submit a Volunteer Intake form and attend orientation prior to beginning as a Partner in Reading.
Our next training for new Partners in Reading volunteers will be in Fall 2010!
Call or email to register for this session, or to learn more.
