  • Mission The Literacy Council Project of the Family Resource Center of Sheboygan County is a volunteer-based organization that provides reading partners to elementary schools and free, one-to-one literacy instruction to English and non-English speaking adult residents of Sheboygan County.  The Literacy Council Project recruits and trains volunteer literacy tutors and serves as a resource for instructional materials, workshops, support, and sometimes as a meeting place for tutoring sessions. The Literacy Council Project collaborates with other organizations and individuals in the community to promote literacy in Sheboygan County.
We are an affiliated agency of the Sheboygan and Plymouth Area United Way.
  • Programs
    • One-on-One Adult TutoringThe One-on-One Adult Tutoring program serves Sheboygan County adults who want to improve their basic literacy skills or who want to learn to speak, read, and write English. Trained, caring volunteer tutors provide individualized instruction that is tailored to the student’s personal goals and learning style. Tutoring services are provided at no charge to the student.

The Literacy Council Project trains volunteer tutors and provides ongoing support in the form of workshops, a resource library, a newsletter, and an online discussion group. The Literacy Council Project also provides students and tutors with instructional materials that are designed for adult learners.

    • Partners in Reading

Partners in Reading is a reading enrichment program available to all public and private elementary schools in Sheboygan County. The program focuses on students in kindergarten through third grades, matching volunteer reading partners with students to provide additional one-on-one or small-group reading opportunities.

The goal of the Partners in Reading program is to provide an adult who has been trained to support and encourage reading development in a positive manner; someone who can serve as a positive reading role model for the student and engage the student in active reading and discussion activities to enhance comprehension.

      Comments from participating schools…

“She started out a non-reader and now she is at grade level and excited about reading! She is proud to work with her volunteer.” 1st grade teacher

“He now loves to read and try new words. He feels he is becoming a reader.” 2nd grade teacher

“Mrs. K made a significant difference for him. She was great!” 3rd grade teacher

Comments from Partners in Reading volunteers…

“It is so rewarding to help a student one-on-one. They see their own progress as individuals, not comparing themselves to others.”

“I love it! So wonderful to see the improvement in a student.”

“The students and staff have been so gracious and thoughtful. I look forward to another student next year.”

Our next Orientation for new Partners in Reading volunteers will be in the fall. Please contact us if you would like to to register for the Orientation or learn more about this great program!
